Alaska Rush Soccer Club runs recreational level soccer programming for children 3 - 10 years old (birth years 2011-2017) in the greater
Anchorage area. The Rush Youth Soccer League, or RYSL, is the first step into soccer for many future Rush competitive players.
The program begins at age 3, with three age group divisions for players as they progress in their development.

“We look at soccer development not just as how well a youngster can kick a soccer ball,” Technical Director Brian Lux said. “We want to, through soccer, help our RYSL kids develop their technical soccer ability, physical literacy skills, and cognitive and psycho-social level.”

“And, above all else, we want these kids to have a great time and fall in love with soccer.”

Lauren Meehan, who is a RYSL lead coach and holds a National Youth Diploma from the United States Soccer Federation, structures sessions that touch on all aspects of a child’s development. “I have the 5 to 7 year olds and within a fun and engaging session, I make sure they’re asked questions, lead parts of activities themselves, and are challenged to learn and master soccer and physical literacy skills.”

Meehan continued, “The age group I have is also moving from a more singular world view to one where they can work with teammates so we structure in progression that has the kids working in pairs and as teams at times.”

The oldest RYSL group is led by long-time coach Johnny Turner and prepares the players for a transition into pre-competitive and competitive soccer.
“We are lucky to have Johnny and Lauren and our wonderful RYSL assistant coaches, who are senior division players in our club and do a fantastic job with the RYSL kiddos,” Lux shared.

“We are able to have all of our RYSL kids playing at the same time at the same place in the winter, which makes it convenient for families and has the added benefit of reinforcing a unified club culture. The kids see each other playing and can look up to the older kids and then are all singing Rush songs together at the end,” Lux continued.
